Live Heart-Rate Leaderboards: The Secret to High-Energy Classes

For Gyms

Walk past two studios mid-class and you can feel the difference in a second. One room is quietly getting through the session. The other is buzzing, with people pushing, glancing up, egging each other on. The energy in that second room isn't luck. It's usually something on the wall giving everyone a reason to dig in.

A heart-rate leaderboard on your gym screens is one of the simplest ways to manufacture that energy on purpose. I'll walk through why it works and how to run it well.

Why a quiet class is a problem

Energy drives retention. Members come to a class for the session and the atmosphere, so when the room feels flat, they drift to the gym down the road that feels alive. A flat class doesn't just underperform on the day; it quietly feeds member churn.

What a live leaderboard changes

Put everyone's live heart rate and effort points up on the screen and three things happen:

  • Effort becomes visible. People naturally push harder when their effort is on the wall, not to win, just to avoid being seen coasting.
  • The room competes together. A shared board turns a room of individuals into one class chasing the same thing.
  • Coaches get a tool. Your instructor can call out the board, rally the room and push the people who have more to give.

It's friendly competition, and it's the difference between members enduring a class and enjoying it.

Make it fair for everyone

The classic objection: won't a leaderboard just reward the fittest and demoralise everyone else? Only if it's built badly. Fittest scores on effort relative to the individual, and crucially it scores strength work to the same standard as cardio, so the person lifting isn't invisible next to the person on the rower. Everyone can top the board on a given day if they bring the effort, which is exactly what keeps the back of the room engaged. (More on that in Strength Scoring.)

No belts required

The reason a lot of gyms never get this energy is the hardware barrier: if members have to buy a belt, half the room never joins in. Fittest runs on the wearables members already own and displays on the TV you already have, so the whole class is on the board from day one, not just the few who bought kit.

Beyond the class

The leaderboard is the hook; the habit is what keeps them. Because every session also banks points, logs personal bests and feeds a weekly summary, that Tuesday class becomes another visible step in a member's progress. Add challenges between members and the effort in the room carries on between sessions. The energy gets them in the room; the progress gets them back.

How Fittest helps

Fittest puts live heart rate, effort points and leaderboards from any wearable straight onto your gym screens, fair across cardio and strength, with no belts to buy, so every class has a reason to push. Layer on challenges, personal bests and weekly summaries, and the energy on the wall turns into members who keep coming back.
